SHARE THE ROAD!!!
Being that we are avid cyclists and have represented and currently are representing cyclists that were struck by vehicles, this a topic that is near and dear to us and one that needs to be addressed on a routine basis as some people may believe they are exempt from having to share the road.
Cyclists are allowed to ride their bikes on the road! You may not agree with that but that does not mean that you are allowed to disobey the law. In Illinois, a driver has to give a cyclist 3 feet of space while passing him or her.
While an explicit 3-foot buffer zone rule does not exist yet in MO, leaving a safe distance while passing is required. The link below gives an update on the Sunset Hills, MO situation in which Mayor Mark Furrer allegedly struck Missouri cycling champion, Randy Murdick in an intentional manner. Prosecutors have charged the mayor with two felonies, second-degree assault and property damage. You can read more about it by clicking on the link below.
If you or another cyclist you know have been struck by a vehicle, regardless of whether you believe it was an intentional act or negligent act on the part of the driver, please give the Law Office of Keith Short, P.C. so we can talk with you about your options. 618-254-0055.
