SOMETHING TO REMEMBER IF YOU GET PULLED OVER FOR JUST A SAFETY BELT VIOLATION

An officer tells you that he stopped your vehicle because you were not wearing your safety belt.  An important part of the safety belt statute in IL to remember is according to 625 ILCS 5/12-603.1(f), “A law enforcement officer may not search or inspect a motor vehicle, its contents, the driver, or a passenger solely because” of a safety belt violation. A safety belt violation alone does not give an officer probable cause to search. REMEMBER THAT.
