Why are attorneys necessary? An outsider’s perspective…
Until a couple of years ago I was a “normal” person. I hadn’t ever needed a lawyer and, honestly, I didn’t have a very good first impression of lawyers. Then one day a good friend of mine, who happened to be a paralegal, told me that her boss was looking for a part-time employee. I applied and took the job. Here are some of the things I’ve discovered:
- Lawsuits are sometimes necessary to help people who are hurt get treatment. Not everyone can deal with insurance companies by themselves and get proper treatment for their injuries. They need help to take on those insurance companies that try to get out of holding up their end.
- There is a statute of limitations that says if your case is not on file by that time you are forever barred from filing. If you do not seek an attorney prior to the statute running out, you could end up paying for treatment out of your own pocket. This is where an attorney can help make sure you get the necessary treatment for your injuries.
- In my interview Mr. Short told me that he prided himself on not being one of THOSE attorneys that people hear about and think “he’s in it for the money.” That he wanted to help people in situations that are unfair, people who are lost and need direction, who are being taken advantage of due to their lack of knowledge in how the law works. I have to admit that in the back of my mind I wondered if he was “feeding me a line”. But after working here I found that what he said is the truth. He is selective in the cases he takes. For instance, he doesn’t take cases that seem “frivolous”. He will not take cases where a client lies to us, can’t provide proof they were injured or that it was the fault of someone else. He won’t take cases that he is not familiar with the law. He will refer those cases to co-counsels that are much better versed in those areas of law.
